WDW 101: How to pack for Walt Disney World - summer trip edition

Packing for Walt Disney World vacations can be quite the adventure before you ever set foot inside one of the theme parks. Nothing can turn a trip sour quite like packing for the wrong weather. And what mom out there doesn’t want to simplify this part of the vacation process? If you’re an overstimulated, busy mom tasked with packing the majority of the family, you don’t want to complicate this any further than it may already be.

With a little bit of preparation this can become one of the easiest aspects of your magical adventure! We are going to take a look at packing for your trip from a hot-weather perspective, which basically means preparing to go to Orlando, Florida any time between mid-May through early October. (Although, if we’re being honest, Florida weather can be unpredictable even in the “cooler” months.)

What’s the weather like at Walt Disney World?

Before we dive straight into packing for the summer vacations, we should take a look at the average annual weather in Orlando, Florida. The winter months see slightly lower temperatures and more total dry days than the rest of the year.

The rainiest months are July, August, and September (historically speaking). But it’s important to note here that Florida does have a tropical climate, and with that comes the potential for showers and storms to pop up anytime throughout the year. The heat in Florida really starts to rise beginning in May and does not show signs of cooling until you head into late October. Combine the fact that the hottest stretch of months are also the wettest stretch of months means packing appropriately can be quite tricky! So how do you prepare for the heat and the rain while not overpacking and having to lug around extra luggage to accommodate for the weather?

Keeping it Light

If you’re traveling to Walt Disney World over the summer, you can rest assured that it will be hot and humid. It also means that you’ll likely experience rain at some point throughout your trip. This does not always put a damper on your day in the parks as many of the showers pass quickly. This does mean you’ll need to be prepared to handle the heat and moisture during your Disney family vacation. While we aren’t going to cover item by item for your packing list, that can be found on our packing guide, we will hit the must-packs for summer travel.

We always suggest that you pack as light as possible, knowing this can be quite difficult with a larger family or when packing for younger kids. To battle the elements, we strongly suggest packing lightweight cotton clothes for the kids & yourself. It also helps to pack UPF protectant clothing if you have anything like that in your wardrobe. Sunscreen is a must, along with your preferred brand of aloe, especially if the Walt Disney World Resort pools are in your plans. And speaking of those awesome resort pools or WDW Water Parks, you’ll want to pack at least two sets of swimsuits for everyone in your travel party. We all do our best to avoid sunburn, but it’s the reality of being outdoors in Florida for several hours during the summer. Don’t forget HATS & SUNGLASSES!!! You’ll want to protect the top of your head and your eyes from the sun while walking through the parks.

Packing to stay dry

We’ve covered the heat, now let’s help you pack to beat the rain! There are two schools of thought when it comes to summer time rain in Walt Disney World. The first is to pack or buy rain ponchos. Ponchos are typically lightweight and easy to pack, but they can also have a short lifespan depending on how heavily they are used. They are, however, less expensive to purchase and less likely to make you feel guilty if you have to trash them during or at the end of your trip.

The other option is to pack a lightweight rain jacket. These will be more durable than the aforementioned ponchos and you’ll be less likely to leave them behind when your trip comes to an end. One of the downsides to packing a rain jacket is that they can be bulkier than a poncho. Another is that they tend to be more expensive, but you do get your money’s worth (I know our family has had the same rain jackets last for years).

Either option will certainly help keep you dry when those summer showers and storms start to arrive. Neither will keep you perfectly dry if you’re caught outside, but will do the job until you’re able to seek shelter indoors.

BONUS: Packing to stay hydrated

It’s really important to dress appropriately for the weather and protect your body, but do not forget about staying hydrated and taking care your body while in the heat. One of the greatest things about Walt Disney World is that they offer tons of free ice water throughout each park! Make sure to pack your best portable and reusable water bottle for your trip. You also have the option to buy special edition, commemorative, or Disney-themed refillable water bottles while on property, but be prepared to pay a premium for those. Packing at least two water bottles, per person, will keep you well hydrated throughout the day as long as you make sure to take full advantage of the free water located throughout the parks at many of the quick service dining options. Always make sure to ask for more ice, if needed, to keep those water bottles cold!

Another aspect to keeping your body hydrated is to incorporate a hydration booster, or electrolyte replacement supplement. For the parents on our trip, this will be managed thanks to Drink LMNT. It’s tough enough navigating the Florida heat alone, but when you throw in the physical exertion that comes from carrying bags and pushing strollers, it’s highly important to keep your body in top shape to keep up with the kids.

Plan for FUN!

Knowing that your trip is going to be special for your family, keep it at the top of your mind that the main goal is to have so much fun! You’ll make so many magical memories while in Walt Disney World, regardless of the time of year you decide to travel to Orlando. If you put a little bit of thought into your packing and preparation, then you can travel easier knowing that you have taken the right steps to pack light, pack appropriately for the weather, and have a plan to stay hydrated while visiting the Walt Disney World parks and resorts!
